About the Exhibition_

“A SPACE ODYSSEY” is an annual event held by HKU SPACE for BA (Hons) Graphic Design final year students. This year’s exhibition will present the graduate’s final year projects with a specific theme “16 Visual Vibrations”, representing 16 different views about 16 social issues. In additional, the exhibition will also present students’ other excellent works done during the course.

2009-03-28 Ming Pao Weekly

We thank you for the editor's appreciation... We are on the ‘Editor's Choice’ on Ming Pao Weekly dated 2009-03-28! :)

Yet in the opening paragraph,「又或以大隻佬雜誌反對浪費食品的包裝」(highlighted) is a bit confusing...? One of our major projects,「大隻佬雜誌 /IRONMAN (editorial)」is focused on introducing bodybuilders' life and their values; 「反對浪費食品的包裝 /Wasting’s (packaging)」is re-introducing excessive festival food with new titles and taglines on packaging. Thus two projects are not really related. :P

So... please keep supporting our exhibition, and feel free to come to our 2nd stop @JCCAC which lasts till April 19!!

Thank you. :)

Visual Vibrations_ Wasting's

by Lam Wing Chung Agnes

“Wasting's” is a conceptual brand which sells different kinds of festival food, and reflects the issue of excessive food that is being wasted in big festivals in Hong Kong.

Rather than telling people “how to save food/ money” or “how to reduce festival (food) waste”, I choose to redesign the packages of festival food with new titles and sarcastic tagline – “The Goodness of Excessiveness”, in an irony approach. “Wasting's” can force its audiences to confront with their habitual manner, and consequences of wasting festival food in a compulsory way. Different subtitles or comments (statements) found on the packaging will sound sarcastic towards the wasters, or putting them into an awkward situation due to their prior act of creating (either voluntarily or passively) excessive festival food. It is like a “trap”; thus I wish the audiences can learn a lesson from it.

Visual Vibrations_ VOTE!!GOSSIP

by But Ting Yan Claudia

Election is a system to elect an eligible person for a post, it is supposed to be taken serious with integrity. However, in the process of election, the nominees, like a gossipmonger, will slander and defame on others in order to gain more supporters. In this condition, the ideology of an election has been changed. In my opinion, election is about gossip, and gossip is used as a weapon to make the election into a farce. A fictitious election is to let audiences aware that elections are full of gossips; the value and purpose of an election have become contorted.

This Campaign will focus on the elections in America, which are more familiar to audiences. Five icon as nominees will be symbolized by five different weapons, that fill with real examples of statements about gossip. These icons represent typical gossip in an election. Such as gossip that unveil by media, supporters attacking opponent nominees and nominees who accuse each other. By using these icons, their “achievements” in different fields will be illustrated. The aim of this campaign is to stimulate audiences’ mind ‘Do we vote for the gossip or the ability of the nominees?’ In additional, ‘Do we really need gossips in elections?’
