About the Exhibition_

“A SPACE ODYSSEY” is an annual event held by HKU SPACE for BA (Hons) Graphic Design final year students. This year’s exhibition will present the graduate’s final year projects with a specific theme “16 Visual Vibrations”, representing 16 different views about 16 social issues. In additional, the exhibition will also present students’ other excellent works done during the course.

Visual Vibrations_ Slanguage

by Lee Ho Yan Hugo

This project is call “Slanguage”, which originates from the combination of two words “Slang” and “Language”. Nowadays there are full of informal languages appears in the language studying of the new generation (mid 90s). This project is to show how the new generation was influenced by the media culture in Hong Kong. Media culture in Hong Kong is always futuristic. To open young people market, many companies like to use some futuristic words or language to promote their item/service through the media. Besides, internet has provided a place that young people can create their own language, culture and communicate with each other easily. Therefore “Slanguage” is like a virus which infected the young people quickly.

People have less awareness to the influence of media culture on new generation. This project is to remind people that everyone has the responsibility to this situation. To improve the language standard of the new generation, we cannot focus on changing the education system only, but also from our daily life environment.
